She's All Worked up About this Poem

I was contentedly waiting for her to turn the computer over to me so I could do my job of marketing Choices Meant for Gods...you know...telling all you visitors how to get your copies...telling you where to find her on the Online Book Tour tomorrow, etc., when she came flying out of her writing den with this book of poetry giddy with excitement saying, "Oh, Nigel, just listen to this!"

Fine. The dragon in me is interested in poetry. I'll listen. It's by Emily Bronte:

Riches I hold in light esteem
And Love I laugh to scorn
And lust of Fame was but a dream
That vanished with the morn--

And if I pray, the only prayer
That moves my lips for me
Is--"Leave the heart that now I bear
And give me liberty."

Yes, as my swift days near their goal
'Tis all that I implore--
Through life and death, a chainless soul
With courage to endure!

Now, Sandy's read this poem before, she said, but it never struck her before as it did this evening. She asked me, eyes alight and this look of almost rapture about her: "Doesn't it just fit the arc you go through perfectly?"

What? I nearly fell off the couch. If that's my character arc, I demand to see this Book II she's written. Now. But she told me not to fret and scampered back into the den as if she didn't just set every nerve in my body on edge. These fantasy authors don't realize what they put us characters through.

These authors must be coddled and allowed to be creative in whatever way they know best. It's usually only unnerving while they're beset with the image or the idea...and there are some clever ways to get them "un-beset" with an image or idea, if you'd like to discuss those when your author isn't around. I've learned some fabulous tricks...the very best is to catch them in traffic. You can lay out a scene that completely transforms something they've already written if you've got them in traffic when you explain your idea. They're literally trapped in the car listening to you...
